Pair of William III Britannia standard
silver trefid spoons. The back of the stem ends of both spoons are engraved
with pricked initials. One spoon is engraved "IB over ID" and the
other is engraved "IM over ID". The front of both stem ends are
engraved with contemporary initials "M * S". The backs of the bowls
of both spoons have a well-defined double ribbed rat-tail, enclosing a line of
beading. These spoons are somewhat longer and larger than the average trefid
spoon and are very fine indeed. Maker :- Isaac Davenport
Condition :-Very good condition indeed with
well-defined rat-tails and well-shaped bowls. The hallmarks are excellent with
the exception of the maker's mark and Britannia mark on one of the spoons which
are rubbed. There is a slight flake in the silver of one of the spoons at the
end of the stem at the back but it is negligible.
Hallmarked :- London 1697
.
Size :- 7.7 inches long (19.6
cm)
Weight :- 3.69 ozt (114.8 g)
The "M * S" which is engraved on the
front of the stems of both spoons was probably engraved there because there was
no room on the back. Although these initials look contemporary, they may have
been engraved twenty years or so later when a child inherited them. Isaac
Davenport learnt his skills apprenticed to Thomas Allen, who was a prolific
spoonmaker. See Index No. 2143 for information regarding trefid spoons.
