Victorian sterling silver cheroot case with a pull-off top
which incorporates a hinge-lidded snuff compartment. Both the case and the
snuff compartment are gilt inside. The whole of the case is pleasingly engraved
with foliage scrolls and some flowers on a matted ground, with the exception of
part of one side of the top which bears the following inscription:
"Presented to Mr. A Cumming by a number of the Servants ON THE SCOTTISH
CENTRAL AND STIRLING AND DUNFERMLINE RAILWAYS as a Token of their respect and
esteem on the occasion of his leaving Stirling. 5th April 1856"
Maker :- MACKAY
Condition :-Very good condition. A few
signs of wear inside the snuff box compartment. However, the engraving is
extremely crisp. The hallmarks on the flange of the lower part of the case are
very good except for some wear on the maker's mark (which is still very
legible). The hallmarks inside the snuff box compartment are all very sharp and
clear.
Hallmarked :- Edinburgh 1846

The recipient of the cheroot case has been
researched by a genealogist and the notes are available to anybody interested
in buying the case. Among other facts, it appears that Mr. Cumming went on to
Australia to work on the railways and died there.
