George IV set of four sterling silver salt cellars with gilt
interiors.. The fluted bodies are surmounted by heavy vine leaf and grape cast
borders and supported by a shaped cast foot. Between body and foot, there is a
small collar of similar decoration. On each foot is engraved the family crest
for Marche of Windsor.
Maker :- Charles Fox (II)
Hallmarked :- London 1828
Condition :-Excellent. Hallmarks good on
three of the salts but maker's mark slightly mistruck but very legible. On the
fourth salt, hallmarks slightly rubbed but maker's mark very crisp. .
Size :- 2.2 inches (5.6cm)
high x 4 inches (10.1cm) diameter.
Weight :- 14.8ozt (461g)
These are extremely smart salt cellars. The one
with the slightly rubbed marks has obviously been used more frequently than the
others. Charles Fox (II) is known for his consistently high quality of
production and these salts are no exception. He has been quoted as possibly
being the last individualist plateworker before the flood of Victorian mass
production.
