George III sterling silver Scottish plaid brooch engraved with a Celtic floral and bright cut design. The pin is fixed on a bar enableing it to revolve from front to back. The reverse is perfectly plain and is stamped with the hallmark for Glasgow and also with the maker's mark for Adam Graham. The reverse also has a scratched contemporary date "1773" and
is engraved with the contemporary initials JF.

This is a very interesting piece, not only because plaid brooches of this period are collector's items but also because of the bright cut design. A bright cut piece of silver made in London in 1773 would be considered to be an early example of that design. It is, therefore, a remarkably early example for a piece of silver made in the provinces,
which usually trailed some time behind the London fashion. This would also explain why the bright cutting was so delightfully rudimentary.
