Click here for a larger image Russian solid silver nineteenth century cheroot case of very substantial weight. The lid is beautifully chased and engraved with an agrarian scene of a Russian peasant tilling the soil with horse and plough. This is executed in very high relief. The background of a large expanse of open ground with tufted vegetation and some houses and woodland on the far left horizon is chased in lower relief. Apart from the peasant, the plough, the horse and the sky, the rest of the outside of the box is very softly gilt.
Maker :- GL
Condition :-Slight, superficial scratch on top left hand corner. Apart from that, the case is in excellent condition with the chasing and engraving in a very crisp state. The hallmarks are struck by the central catch on the rim of the lower part of the case, also on the inside of the base and on the bottom left side of the outside of the lid. The hallmarks on the rim are slightly rubbed but very clear. The other two sets of hallmarks are extremely sharp and very clear indeed. Both the upper and lower parts of the case each have two lugs which would have held a piece of elastic to keep the cheroots in place. However, the elastic is no longer there.

Size :- 4.5 inches (11.4cm) long x 2.5 inches (6.35cm) wide.

This cheroot case is of extremely high quality and of a very generous weight. The chasing and engraving is of the highest standard and the craftsmanship throughout is excellent.
