Click here for a larger image George I silver counter box containing 17 counters. The top of the pull-off lid is stamped with the bust of George I looking right, laureate, hair long, in armour and mantle. In the field on either side are the initials G R. The base of the box is stamped with the maker's mark only. The body of the box is decorated with two bands of ribbing. The 17 counters are thin shells of silver, stamped on one side only with the identical portrait of George I as that on the top of the box lid.
Maker :- Thomas Keddar
Condition :-Very good considering the use this box was put to. One small indentation and a few slight digs on the side of the box. The maker's mark on the base of the box is slightly rubbed but perfectly visible. All the counters are in good condition.

These counters were mostly used for gaming and the number of counters one had depended on one's luck. The 17 counters do not quite fill half the box. These counters are recorded in "Medallic Illustrations of the History of Great Britain and Ireland", originally published by the Trustees of the British Museum, 1885, in Volume II, page 430, Item 23.
