This is a most interesting piece because of its history. The Marsary family of Kensington, London, were descended from the Marquis de Vassy of Normandy. They were Protestants who fled France in about 1685 and settled in Devon in order to avoid persecution by Louis XIV (revocation of the Treaty of Nantes). The maker of this jug, John Hunt, was a partner of the firm Hunt & Roskell who were silversmiths and jewellers to Queen Victoria. The firm's chronology goes back to Paul Storr.
