Click here for a larger image William IV sterling silver presentation cup. The cup is of campana shape on a spreading circular foot chased with a band of flutes. The two curved cast handles are decorated with acanthus leaves and flowers. The inside of the cup is silver gilt. The coat of arms of Trinity College, Cambridge is engraved on the side bearing the hallmarks. On the other side, the cup is inscribed "This Oration Prize the legacy of Dr. Hooper Adgudged to Charles Rann Kennedy By Trinity College Cambridge 1830".

Condition :-The hallmarks are slightly rubbed but very legible. However the engraving of the coat of arms and the inscription is very crisp. There is one scratch on the left hand side of the crest and a few superficial digs on the body of the cup. Apart from this, the cup is in very good condition.

KENNEDY, Charles Rann (1808-1867), lawyer and scholar; brother of Benjamin Hall Kennedy; educated at Birmingham and Shrewsbury; fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge; senior classic, 1831; Bell and Pitt scholar, Porson prizeman; MA, 1834; barrister, Lincoln's Inn, 1835; engaged in Stockdale v. Hansard; appeared for the plaintiff in Swinfen v. Swinfen (failing to recover fees); published translations of Demosthenes and Virgil, poems and legal treaties.
