Six Sterling Silver Rat-tail Hanoverian Tablespoons
Excellent set of six sterling silver rat-tail Hanoverian
tablespoons of very good gauge, form and colour. Newcastle 1733 by Isaac
Cookson. The bowls are a very elegant almond shape and the ridge along the end
half of the stems is well defined. The rat-tail on the backs of the bowls is
very crisp. The full hallmarks and maker's mark are stamped at the base of the
back of the stems and are still very good although no longer crisp. On two of
the tablespoons, the maker's mark is faint but legible. At the end of the back
of each spoon are the initials IM '" S which were engraved contemporily.

Everything about these spoons shouts quality. The
bowls are beautiful and the balance of each spoon is perfect. When not being
used for soup, these spoons would be very useful for serving vegetables or
puddings. Isaac Cookson was the leading Newcastle silversmith of his day. He
made hollow ware as well as forks and spoons and his work was invariably of
high quality.
