| This medalet is one of a handful of similar ones, all stressing the same message. Some are dated 1699 but this one is not. However, it is assumed to have been struck at about the same time. The reason for the Prince's portrait being so frequently put forward may have been to serve as repeated assertions of his legitimacy and of his right of succession to the crown of England. These medals were probably intended as memorials given by James II to the adherents who crowded around the fallen monarch. The reference book "Medallic Illustrations of the History of Great Britain and Ireland", published by the Trustees of the British Museum in 1885 rates this particular medal as "Rare". | ||
