engraved the motto "FORTIS IN ARDUIS" (Brave in difficulties). A full
set of hallmarks is stamped on the reverse side of the end of the handle and
they are all very clear.

Due to its medium size and deep bowl, this ladle
is extremely versatile. It is excellent for gravy in one of the smaller- sized
gravy boats but it can also be used to serve a very wide variety of sauces as
well as mayonnaise and cream. The crest and the beading round the handle makes
this ladle a very attractive piece. George Adams was part of the Chawner
dynasty of silversmiths working in the 19th century. He was one of the most
prolific makers of flatware in the mid-Victorian period and whatever he made
was always of a very high standard.
