Very good William III silver trefid
spoon. The back of the end of the stem is engraved with the contemporary
initials "EM" with "92" roughly engraved beneath. This
would lead us to assume that this spoon was given as a gift one year after it
was made. The back of the bowl has a double ribbed rat-tail enclosing a line of
beading.
Maker :- William Scarlett
Condition :-Very good condition with a
pleasing patina. The beading on the central line of the rat-tail is a little
flattened with age. The hallmarks are excellent with the exception of the date
mark which has become rubbed because that is where the spoon is held when used.
However, the date mark is still clearly visible.
Hallmarked :- London 1691
.
Size :- 7.55 inches long
(19.2 cm)
Weight :- 1.57 ozt (48.8 g)
The trefid is the earliest spoon of modern form
and the first trefid to be recorded was in 1662. See Index No. 2143 for more
details about trefid spoons. William Scarlett was a prominent and very prolific
spoonmaker of the later 17th Century. His spoons were always of a very high
standard.
