Very elegant George III sterling silver, Old
English Feather-edge soup ladle. This ladle is made in two parts and the bowl
is joined to the handle by a scarf join. The handle of the ladle is engraved
with feather edging all around the sides. This is echoed by the crenellated
feather edging around the border of the bowl. The end of the handle is engraved
with the crest of a demi- lion rampant above contemporary initials, probably I
D S C, engraved in a very decorative entwined style. The handle meets the bowl
with a very decorative double drop. The very clear hallmarks are stamped at the
base of the handle. Maker :- Thomas Evans
Condition :-Extremely good, with a very
pleasing patina. The hallmarks are good and clear.
Hallmarked :- London 1776
Size :- 13.6 inches (34.5
cm)long
Weight :- 3 ozt (93.3 g)
This is a very beautiful ladle and distinctively
18th century. The crenellation on the border of the bowl gives the ladle an air
of great distinction. This pattern dated principally from the 1770s. It has
been copied intermittently up to the present day but later manufacturers have
never managed to capture the same grace. A wonderful ladle to have on your
table or to give as a gift.
