Sugar was bought in loaf form until the early years of the twentieth century and crushers were very often made of Old Sheffield Plate which would give them enough strength to attack such a loaf. Silver sugar crushers, such as this one, would only be used to crush small lumps of the original sugar loaf as part of the tea or coffee serving ritual. To-day, this crusher makes a very effective swizzle stick for punch or any other drink that needs mixing as well as being a very decorative item to have on display among other small pieces of silver.
