Click here for a larger image George III Irish military sugar caster with sterling silver pierced lid. Dublin circa 1800. The slightly shaped body is made of very attractive cut glass. The sterling silver "pull-off" lid is decorated with bands of vertical piercing. The base of the lid is engraved with the words "LONGFORD MILITIA". The base is also stamped with two hallmarks - the harp crowned for Dublin and Hibernia.

The fact that this sugar caster has a military connection makes this quite a rare piece. Longford is a town and also a county in Ireland quite near the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
