George III Irish military sugar caster with sterling silver
pierced lid. Dublin circa 1800. The slightly shaped body is made of very
attractive cut glass. The sterling silver "pull-off" lid is decorated
with bands of vertical piercing. The base of the lid is engraved with the words
"LONGFORD MILITIA". The base is also stamped with two hallmarks - the
harp crowned for Dublin and Hibernia.

The fact that this sugar caster has a military
connection makes this quite a rare piece. Longford is a town and also a county
in Ireland quite near the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern
Ireland.
