Click here for a larger image Extremely elegant George III sterling silver bright-cut cream jug of circular vase shape on a square, baluster foot. There is a band of reeding round the rim and another round the foot. The handle is also reeded and has a central ridge. The body is decorated with very crisp bright-cut swags of leaves and flowers surmounted with a bow and with bands of bright-cutting above and below. There is a bright-cut cartouche on both sides of the cream jug. One is empty, while the other encloses initials which are engraved in such a decoratively entwined manner that it is difficult to decypher them. They are probably RSB. The spout is decorated with six vertical lines of bright-cutting, while there are three lines running along the edge of the square base. The hallmarks are stamped on the underside of the foot. They have been well protected by the foot's rim and are very crisp indeed.
Maker :- Henry Chawner
Condition :-Virtually mint, with just a few small, old, scratches on the spout. The bright cutting is wonderfully crisp and the hallmarks are excellent.
Hallmarked :- London 1794 Hallmarks
Size :- 4.9 inches (12.45 cm) high overall
Weight :- 4.29 ozt (133 g)
This is a most elegant cream jug. Jugs of this style can often be quite light and thin but this one is of extremely good gauge and is of very high quality all round. Henry Chawner was the only son of Thomas Chawner who was apprenticed to Ebenezer Coker. Like his father, he was a gentleman of some affluence and the quality of his work was always excellent.
