(The french defeated at Taisnieres, 31 Aug. 1709.) "Medallic
Illustrations", Vol. II, page 359/197. In order to attack Mons, the
Allies, led by Marlborough, were forced to pass the strong lines which the
French, led by Villars, had formed from Mons to the Sambre. Marlborough
out-manoeuvred the French and passed their lines. However, while Marlborough
was waiting for reinforcements, the French strongly entrenched themselves.
After a very sanguinary battle, in which Villars was wounded, the French were
routed. The unanimity and valour of the generals and troops of the Allies were
never more conspicuous than on this day.
