William III/Queen Anne silver and lignum vitae seal
William III/Queen Anne silver seal with a turned lignum vitae
handle which has a flat base. Circa 1700. Unmarked. The silver seal consists of
a central monogram which is so decoratively designed that only an expert could
decipher it. The monogram is surrounded by a contemporary design and topped by
the coronet of a Marquis.
Condition :-Excellent, with just one small
indentation in the wooden handle, like a nail mark. The silver seal is in very
crisp condition. The original two pins holding the silver seal to the handle
have been replaced
Circa :- 1700
Size :- 2.7 inches (6.9 cm)
long
This is a very attractive piece. Lignum vitae is a
hard-wooded tree which was often used during that period. However, although it
is a wood, it does not float, it sinks.
