Click here for a larger image Pair Victorian sterling silver novelty peppers in the shape of curling stones of cosecutive dates. Edinburgh 1882 and 1883. Both peppers are spherically shaped with a flat base and a handle at the top which curls back on itself like the handle of an iron. A double line of reeding half way up the lower section of each pepper is echoed by a double line of reeding at the end of the lid and the silver between these two bands of reeding is matted. The lids of the peppers are pierced in an attractive pattern which is mainly star-shaped. The circular base of the handle finials is defined with a ring of beading. The lids screw onto the bases by means of a central post soldered to the bottom of the peppers, which has a screw on the end. The 1882 pepper is fully hallmarked on the inside of the flat base, while the lid is stamped with Queen Victoria's head (the duty mark) and also the Edinburgh town mark. The 1883 pepper is fully hallmarked on the outside of the flat base and is stamped with the Queen's head, the Edinburgh town mark and the maker's mark on the inside of the lid.

These peppers are quite delightful. It is amazing that they are in such excellent condition since it would be very tempting to whizz them across a table in curling style. Because of their novelty shape, they would go with any pair of salts of a simple design. Hamilton and Inches are Scottish silversmiths, based in Edinburgh, who have always produced silver of very high quality. They are still in business to-day.
