Very elegant George III sterling silver
Onslow pattern serving spoon of good weight. The Onslow pattern scroll at the
end of the spoon's handle is particularly well executed. The scroll is joined
to the rest of the handle by a scarf join which is clearly visible and, on the
back of the spoon, the handle meets the bowl with a very attractive double
drop. Contemporary initials MB are engraved in a flowing style on the back of
the handle, just below the scroll. The hallmarks are stamped very clearly on
the back of the handle near the bowl.
Maker :- William Tant
Condition :-Very good indeed. Some
superficial scratches on the bowl due to use, The patina is very good as are
also the hallmarks
Hallmarked :- London 1767
Size :- 11.9 inches (30.23
cm) long
Weight :- 3.96 ozt (123 g)
The Onslow pattern was originally produced from
about 1760 and is now very rare. Genuine examples, which should have a scarf
join, are now hard to find and are mostly serving pieces. The festive design
makes this a very sought after pattern. The maker's mark on this spoon is
listed as "William Tant (probably)" in Arthur Grimwade's book
"London Goldsmiths 1697 - 1837 Their Marks and Lives". See No.3905 on
page 276.
