George III silver Old English pattern serving spoon
Very well proportioned George III
sterling silver Old English pattern serving spoon, London circa 1770. The end
of the front of the handle has a contemporary engraving of a family crest of a
bird holding a branch in its beak. This engraving has now gently worn with
time. The hallmarks are stamped on the back of the handle at the base by the
bowl and are extremely good. An added interest to this spoon is the fact that
the Assay Office made a mistake and stamped the lion passant mark for sterling
twice and omitted the date letter mark.
Maker :- John Lampfert
Condition :-Very good indeed . A few
scarcely visible superficial scratches made by use over the years but excellent
patina and hallmarks
Hallmarked :- London 1770
Size :- 11.3 inches (28.7
cm) long
Weight :- 2.92 ozt (90.8 g)
The Old English pattern is such an elegant and
simple shape that it would be difficult to tire of it. Also, it blends well
with any other pattern or anything else which is on the table. These serving
spoons are very useful for serving food from oven to table ware since they are
long enough not to slip in. John Lampfert's mark is usually found on
spoons.
