Click here for a larger image Rare silver medal of Charles I when he was still Prince of Wales. The medal is struck on one side only as a thin plate and has no reverse. The plate shows a portrait of the bust of Prince Charles, with beard, ruff and doublet. The legend around the edge of the plate reads "CAROLVS . MA : BR : FR . & . HI : PRINC : EBOR . & . ALB . DVX." (Charles, Prince of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, Duke of York and Albany.)

From the portrait, this plate appears to have been struck around 1619, although Charles's title as "Prince of Wales" is omitted from the legend. See Medallic Illustrations, volume I, page 224, No. 81 where this plate is rated as "Rare". These thin plates with no reverse are technically called shells. They were uniface because they were mainly used on the lids of boxes or on the covers of books.
