Click here for a larger image Very decorative George III Irish sterling silver straight-sided beaker, flaring out slightly at the rim. The base is not flat but has a slight curve which allows the beaker to rock gently if used when travelling. One side of the beaker is decorated with delicately engraved entwined initials "PCCT or J" within an oval, vertical bright-cut cartouche. This is surrounded by bright-cut decoration of leafy scrolls, flowers and bows.
Maker :- Gustavus Byrne
Condition :-Good, with excellent hallmarks on the base. The bright-cut decoration, which is found on one side of the beaker, is still very good but is beginning to mellow gently in parts.
Hallmarked :- Dublin 1795 Hallmarks
Size :- 3.25 inches (8.26 cm) high x 3.25 inches (8.26 cm) wide at top
Weight :- 3.74 ozt (116 g)
This decoration does not have the formality of the English, Adam style but has a delightful flow to it. This beaker is of a very useful size since it could quite easily be used as a container for a number of varied items, such as sweets, chocolates, biscuits or cocktail nibbles, to mention but a few. It would also make a very pleasing vase for small flowers, providing the water was changed frequently.
