Stock No. 2435	Charles I gold posy ring
	Charles I solid gold "posy" ring. The exterior is a plain band with a slightly curved shape. The inside of the ring is inscribed:- " * Love I lyke thee - sweet requite me" followed by the initials "E. H." which probably belonged either to the donor or to the recipient. The gold is a pale lemon colour and is of very high grade.

Condition :-Excellent. The inscription inside the ring is still very clear

The "posy" ring was the most popular type of love ring in use since the Middle Ages. The name "posy" was short for "poesy" and was derived from the amatory inscription which this type of ring bears and which is usually in rhyme or "poesy". These rings were widely used in the Middle Ages (but are now very hard to find). The inscription on medieval rings was usually on the outside of the hoop (which was flat). In later times, the inscription was usually on the inside and the hoop was more rounded. The "posy" ring reached its peak of popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries. By the 17th and 18th centuries, most "posy" rings were also used as wedding rings. Although some of the inscriptions were originated by the donor, there were also a number of standard inscriptions which could be bought already engraved on the rings.
