Click here for a larger image Pair of Victorian sterling silver "novelty" salts in the shape of butter tubs, complete with a pair of salt spoons by the same makers and of the same date. The salts are in the shape of circular, slightly conical tubs standing on a foot. The body of the tub is divided into four bands. The top band is silver gilt, as is also the inside of each tub. The second band down and the lowest band are finished in frosted silver, while the band in between is finished in polished silver, as is also the foot and the two handles. Each tub has two handles on either side in the shape of hand-holds. The hallmarks are very clearly struck on the outside of each foot. The salt spoons have silver gilt bowls, inside and out, and in spite of their size they are fully hallmarked along the stem.

These salts are quite charming. They would be ideal for a smallish table. The Victorians delighted in novelty tableware, particularly in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. These salts are excellent examples of the amusing objects being produced which were executed with great skill and to a very high standard.
