Charles I sterling silver bodkin, of very heavy gauge and
decorated with Stuart engraving. Unmarked, circa 1630. Two-thirds of the way
down one side of the bodkin are engraved the original owner's initials, EL. The
top of the bodkin is finished with a small scoop.
Condition :-Excellent condition with crisp engraving
and a very good gauge of silver

There is some controversy regarding the use of the
small scoop at the top of the bodkin. One school of thought believes it to have
been an ear pick, while others believe the scoop had the dual purpose of
applying wax or oil to the thread to stiffen it, as well as to push the thread
through the material.
