Click here for a larger image Very attractive George III engraved coconut cup mounted with sterling silver in an unusual manner. The coconut is carved with hearts, decorative circles, a weather vane, an anchor and domestic objects. On one side of the cup, within an engraved cartouche is applied a silver heart-shaped shield which is engraved in a contemporary manner with the letter V. The sterling silver mount is made in two parts. The top part consists of a silver cup with a turn-over rim. At the base of this cup is a silver lug ending in a screw. The coconut has a hole in the base which passes through the lug so that the coconut fits over the silver cup. When in place, the turn-over rim of the silver cup forms the rim of the coconut and the silver cup forms the inside of the drinking vessel. The lug screws into the sterling silver base, which consists of three branches with reeding ending in cast paw feet. The lug at the base of the cup is very clearly stamped with the full set of hallmarks for Sheffield 1800, as well as the maker's mark. The same full hallmarks are very clearly stamped on the reverse of the base just above the three legs.
Maker :- G. Eadon & Co
Condition :-Good condition with slight touches of restoration done a long time ago on the silver lining of the cup. The hallmarks are extremely good and crisp both on the silver lining and also on the base. There is a slight split at the rim of the coconut where it has been forced into the silver sleeve at a wrong angle, which could be restored very easily but the coconut has otherwise survived in very good condition and the engraving is very sharp and clear
Hallmarked :- Sheffield 1800 Hallmarks
Size :- 6 inches (15.24 cm) high x 2.8 inches (7.11 cm) diameter at rim
Weight :- 4.39 ozt (136.4 g) silver only
It is quite possible that the coconut was carved in the late eighteenth century by a sailor on board ship with thoughts of home and that the sterling silver mount was made and hallmarked in 1800 when the sailor was home on leave. This is a real collector's piece.
