Victorian presentation candle holder in the shape of a
rectangular casket on four feet with lift-off lid and flame finial. The
inscription on one of the longer sides of the casket reads "THORP ARCH
COLLEGE/ Omne tulit punctum qui/miscuit utile dulci.". The inscription on
the opposite side reads "PRESENTED TO/ Richard Talbot Esq/ by his
affectionate Pupils,/ and assistant Masters,/ at the annual public
examination./ June 18th 1847." When the lid is reversed, the candle holder
is exposed. The full set of hallmarks as well as the maker's mark are stamper
on one of the shorter sides of the base. These are very clear but not crisp.
The same set of full hallmarks are stamped inside the lid and these are very
good with the exception of the maker's mark which is slightly rubbed but very
legible.
Maker :- H. Wilkinson & Co
Condition :-Very good. The hallmarks are
slightly rubbed on the body of the casket but still very legible. The hallmarks
inside the lid are perfectly clear.
Hallmarked :- Sheffield 1841
Size :- 2.5 inches (6.35 cm)
long x 1.7 inches (4.32 cm) wide

This piece is at present being researched and more
will be known about the inscription by February/March next year and the
information will be given freely to the potential purchaser. However, even now
this casket is a delightful collectors' item which would make an excellent gift
because of its novelty value.
