Maker :- Richard Ferris
Charming George III sterling silver brandy pan with pull-off lid, made in Exeter in circa 1800. The base of the pan is flat and the sides are gently convex. On one side of the top of the pan's body there is a lip for pouring the contents. At right angles to this is a handle which is partly silver but continues as a plain, turned, wooden handle to facilitate a cool grip of the pan. The pull-off lid has a curved handle attached. A contemporary family crest is engraved on one side of the pan's body as well as on the lid of an eagle displayed with a ducal coronet around the neck. The base of the pan is stamped with three very crisp hallmarks. The king's head (duty mark), the maker's mark and the silver standard mark (lion passant). The inside of the lid is very clearly stamped with the king's head only.

The Exeter Assay Office closed in 1883. This pan has a variety of uses to-day. Although it can still be used for its original purpose of heating brandy, it is even more useful as a container for hot, melted butter to be poured over asparagus, or hot gravy to pour over meat, or as a container for any hot sauce since the lid and the silver are excellent for preserving the heat. It even looks decorative just standing empty in the dining-room.
