Superlative quality pair of George IV fiddle
thread and shell pattern sterling silver ice spades of great weight. The spades
are of a pleasing shape with a slightly rounded edge. The handles are fashioned
in the fiddle thread and shell pattern, which is extremely crisply defined. Two
contemporary crests are engraved at the end of each handle just below the
shell, with an initial D engraved on the right. Presumably the crests belonged
to husband and wife. The excellent full set of hallmarks are stamped on the
back of each handle just below the shell. An initial D is engraved above one
set of hallmarks and an initial E is engraved above the other.

The price of this pair of ice spades is more than
justified by their extreme rarity as well as their outstanding condition. They
appear to have hardly been used and they are of a most generous weight. They
are not only a pleasure to use but are also of the quality of silver which
never loses its value and are therefore great investments. Although they were
originally used to serve ice and ice cream, they are such a versatile shape
that it would be a pleasure to use them to serve almost anything to-day.
