Very attractive Victorian gold and enamel Land Agent pass for the Manchester Ship Canal Company. Circa 1885, or perhaps just a little bit later. The medal is shaped in a circular form with the two branches of an anchor hook curved around the base. The top bar of an anchor is shown at the top of the medal and a loop or ring is attached to this. Around the edge of the obverse side of the medal is inscribed in raised letters on a matted ground "MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL COMPANY. INCORPORATED 1885." The centre of the obverse is applied with a painted enamel disk depicting a cargo ship in full sail travelling down the canal with flags flying. The reverse of the medal shows a stylised industrial scene in relief at the top of the medal, with LAND AGENT engraved at the bottom. In between the two is engraved the name A.M.. Dunlop, in a different script. This is, presumably, the name of the Land Agent who owned the pass.

This is a charming medal, full of social history. The painting of the ship and canal on the enamel is beautifully done. Manchester serves as a distribution point for the surrounding mill towns and the whole area is the most densely populated region of Britain. The building of the Manchester Ship Canal changed the city from a river port to a seaport.
