Striking Victorian gold and enamel Land Agent pass for the Manchester Ship Canal Company. Circa 1885, or perhaps just a little later. The medal is shaped in a circular form with the two branches of an anchor hook curved around the base. The top bar of an anchor is shown at the top of the medal and a loop or ring is attached to this. The obverse side of the medal is decorated with the full Company Arms in enamel, set into the gold background. On the reverse, around the outside rim is inscribed in raised letters "MANCHESTER SHIP CANAL COMPANY. INCORPORATED 1885". In the centre, within two circles of decoration is engraved "LAND AGENT".

This pass is beautifully executed. The colours and definition on the enamel of the Company Arms are particularly fine. Manchester serves as a distribution point for the surrounding mill towns and the whole area is the most densely populated region of Britain. The building of the Manchester Ship Canal changed the city from a river port to a seaport.
