Very interesting George III sterling silver naval seal of heavy
weight and very high workmanship. Birmingham 1811 by Joseph Willmore. Both
sides of the seal have a double looped decoration ending in a central leaf and
joined to the base of the seal by two balls on each side. The two loops at the
side are held together at the top by a wide, ridged, pendant through which
would pass a chain or ribbon. The back of the base of the seal is hallmarked
with the maker's mark and the Birmingham date mark for 1811 only. The seal
itself is engraved with a man-at-war in full sail and with flags flying and
guns at the ready. Above the prow of the ship is engraved an ensign which is
very crisp but too difficult to read without insider knowledge.

This seal is obviously steeped in history. The
fact that it is of such high quality and heavy weight and made by such a good
maker leads one to suppose that it was made as a memento for a ship's captain
or other high ranking officer during the Napoleonic Wars which were still
raging at that time. To-day, it would make a very charming and interesting
pendant to wear around the neck as well as being a fine addition for any
collector with naval interests.
