Visiting cards were an essential part of the Victorian social scene and it was very much the done thing to call on other members of Society and leave your card. Therefore, owning at least one card case was essential. To-day, these card cases are highly collectable but some people still use them for their business cards, particularly if they have the advantage of being protected by a case.
