Click here for a larger image Charming 17th century solid gold "fede" ring of good weight and in very good condition. The front of the ring is designed with the hands of a male and a female clasped together and holding a heart. Unlike most 17th century rings which are unmarked, this ring has the added benefit of being stamped with a maker's mark on the inside of the ring. However, only the first initial, a capital "D" is clearly legible, although the second initial might well be a capital "L". The inside of the ring bears the very clear inscription:- Let virtue be thy giud. The gold is of a very high grade and has a very pleasing colour.

Condition :-Very good indeed, with little wear. The definition is crisp throughout and the inscription inside the ring is also very clear, The maker's mark can only be partly read because it has been misstruck
Circa :- 1680 Hallmarks
Size :- O (UK ring size) 7.25 (US ring size)

"Fede" rings, are love rings similar to "posy" rings but more rare. Both have an amatory inscription engraved on the inside. However, while the "posy" ring in the 17th century had a plain, slightly rounded, exterior, the "fede" or "faith" ring is flatter and has a delightful decoration in the front of a male and female hand clasped together and holding a heart.
