Very rare Jacobite standing horn snuff mull carved with a caricatured image of Bonnie Prince Charlie - the Young Pretender. Circa 1780. The lid forms the figure's bonnet and is attached by a brass hinge which is extremely firm. The upper part of the hinge has two screws and so does the lower part. However, there are three holes drilled in the lower part of the hinge, one of which seems to be misplaced and therefore never used.

This mull is an outstanding museum piece, not only because of its quality but also because of its history. Charles Edward Louis Philip Casimir Sylveste Stuart (1720 - 1788) was named after his great-grandfather, King Charles I of England, after England's sainted King Edward I and after the kings of France, Spain and Poland and after the saint on whose day he was born (31 December). He was called "The Young Pretender" and nicknamed "Bonnie Prince Charlie". After the rout of the Scots by the Duke of Cumberland at the Battle of Culloden on 16 April, 1746, Charles eventually fled to France and later moved on to Italy. However, the Jacobite cause continued in Scotland.
