Delightful Victorian sterling silver novelty
pepper in the shape of a seated owl. Every detail of the owl is extremely
realistically fashioned, even down to its claws. The big round glass eyes are
amber with black pupils. The head pulls off so that the body can be filled with
pepper and the top of the head is pierced very discreetly but effectively with
scroll- shaped holes which blend with the feathers rather than the usual round
holes. The full set of hallmarks is stamped across the back of the body and
another full set is stamped on the flange of the head.
Condition :-Excellent condition with very
good hallmarks, a good patina and crisp definition

high x 1.2 inches (3.1 cm) at widest point

Novelty peppers were extremely popular with the
Victorians, particularly in the second half of the nineteenth century. To-day,
these peppers are much sought after but hard to find in good condition.
