Click here for a larger image Charming 17th century sucket fork made of silver and agate in circa 1660. The fork is probably Dutch. The silver is not hallmarked but is stamped with a French post-1826 import mark. The two sturdy, deep, tines of the fork are joined to the handle by a horned long drop. Most of the silver part of the handle is plain, with the exception of a contemporary decoration near the centre. The agate part of the handle is a rich amber colour and is beautifully faceted. There is a metal rod running through the agate and this is held in place by a decorative silver finial at the end of the handle. The French import mark is stamped on the back of the silver handle near the base.
Condition :-Extremely good condition considering its age. A few slight chips in the agate at the join with the silver and one small chip near the end of the handle
Circa :- 1660
Size :- 4.9 inches (12.5 cm) long

Sucket forks were used for desserts and it was very usual for them not to be hallmarked. They were in use in England as well as on the continent. Sucket forks with a spoon attached to the other end of the handle were in use in England earlier than the 1600s. However, the use of these forks became much more popular in the 17th century due to the greater availability of imported sugar which led to wider choices of desserts, especially of the candied variety such as candied fruit and others.
