Highly attractive Victorian circular travelling inkwell consisting of a cut-glass body mounted by a silver-gilt top with screw-down lid. London 1848 by Thomas Douglas. The hinged lid has a plain cartouche in the centre on which contemporary initials (LR) are engraved. The lid is held down by a shaped, hinged, thumb piece which screws firmly into the body so that the ink will not spill. On the inside of the lid there is a circular silver gilt disk which holds the lid lining in place. The sides of the silver gilt mount are reeded. Apart from the plain cartouche in the centre of the lid, the whole of the top of the mount, including the lid, the thumb piece and the disk inside the lid are beautifully decorated with scrolls, shells and acanthus leaves on matted ground. The silver gilt mount is extremely well hallmarked. A full set of hallmarks is stamped on the reeding on one side. The lion passant and the Queen's head are stamped inside the lid. The disk inside the lid is stamped with the maker's mark and the thumb piece is stamped with the lion passant and the maker's mark.
Maker :- Thomas Diller
Condition :-Very good condition indeed. A few very small chips on the cut glass on the body but these are negligible compared to the excellent condition of the silver gilt top. The hallmarks are all extremely good and clear
Hallmarked :- London 1848 Hallmarks
Size :- 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) high overall
x 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) diameter

This is a beautifully made inkwell of high quality. These inkwells were usually kept in a travelling desk or a toilet service and were in use from the 18th century to just after the mid 19th century.
