Highly attractive Victorian circular travelling inkwell
consisting of a cut-glass body mounted by a silver-gilt top with screw-down
lid. London 1848 by Thomas Douglas. The hinged lid has a plain cartouche in the
centre on which contemporary initials (LR) are engraved. The lid is held down
by a shaped, hinged, thumb piece which screws firmly into the body so that the
ink will not spill. On the inside of the lid there is a circular silver gilt
disk which holds the lid lining in place. The sides of the silver gilt mount
are reeded. Apart from the plain cartouche in the centre of the lid, the whole
of the top of the mount, including the lid, the thumb piece and the disk inside
the lid are beautifully decorated with scrolls, shells and acanthus leaves on
matted ground. The silver gilt mount is extremely well hallmarked. A full set
of hallmarks is stamped on the reeding on one side. The lion passant and the
Queen's head are stamped inside the lid. The disk inside the lid is stamped
with the maker's mark and the thumb piece is stamped with the lion passant and
the maker's mark. |
