Very decorative George III sterling silver pierced,
vase-shaped, cream pail with an opaque white glass liner and two handles
supported by ram's heads. London 1773 by Charles Aldridge and Henry Green. The
glass liner is not contemporary and is a later replacement. The cream pail
stands on a square base and there is a band of egg and tongue decoration where
the foot meets the base. The rim of the pail is decorated with a band of
beading. The body is pierced in three different styles and has a band of
swagging and drapery. On either side of the pail, within the drapery is a
shield. On one side the shield is oblong and is decorated with an eight
petalled flower head, on the other side, the shield has three points at the top
and is pointed at the base and is engraved with contemporary initials. On each
of the other two sides of the pail there is a cast ram's head whose horns are
extended and joined to form the handle. |
