Click here for a larger image Set of four 18 carat gold Victorian Eton Rowing Club prize medals. 1872 - 1873. Maker W.J.P.. Each medal is in the shape of a shield and has a suspension loop. The obverse of all the medals is engraved with the Eton School emblem. The following inscriptions are engraved on the reverse:

Stamped at the base of each reverse is the maker's mark, W.J.P and the 18 Ct gold mark.

Henry, Wightman Benson was the third son of General Henry Roxby Benson, C.B.. After leaving Eton, H. W. Benson went to Oxford University where he rowed as Captain for his College (Brasenose) and was a member of the Oxford Eight in 1874. He later joined the army and served in South Africa in 1900-2. He was twice mentioned in despatches and was awarded the DSO as well as the Queen's medal 3 clasps and the King's medal 2 clasps. His obituary in "WHO WAS WHO, 1929 - 1940" lists him as : BENSON, Hon. Lt.-Col. Henry Wightman. D.S.O. 1900; J.P.; retired; late East Surrey Regt..
