On the death of his elder brother, the Duke of York, in 1827, the Duke of Clarence became heir to the throne. He received an increase in income and was appointed Lord High Admiral of England, a post which had been revived for the occasion. However, he resigned the office in 1828 as a result of objections made by the Duke of Wellington regarding Royal expenses. William Henry, Duke of Clarence was the third son of George III and Queen Charlotte. He entered the navy at the age of thirteen. He became a friend of Nelson and gave away the bride at Nelson's wedding in Nevis. His advent to the throne was welcomed with great relief by the general populace. This medal is considered to be "Extremely Rare" in gilt on metal.
