There were at least two pairs of slightly differing dies employed to strike this small medal. It was probably intended to be used as a counter and the very emotive and attractive design was intended to underline the strength of the union. Since means of spreading news were limited in those days, the reigning monarch depended heavily on medals such as this one to make known whatever action he wished to publicise and so gain the support of the general public.
