Victorian silver and glass saddle flask complete with
holster
Very elegant Victorian sterling silver and glass saddle flask,
with detachable silver drinking cup at base and complete with leather holster.
London 1875, by Thomas Johnson. The body of the glass flask tapers inwards
slightly towards the neck. The hinged, plain silver lid opens and closes with a
bayonet twist movement. At the base of the flask is a fitted sterling silver
drinking cup 2.1 inches (5.3 cm) high which is released with a pull-off
movement. The inside of the cup is silver gilt. Three family crests are
engraved on one side of the cup. The full set of hallmarks are stamped on the
other side of the cup and are also stamped on the collar of the lid. Hallmarks
are also probably stamped on the inside of the lid but these are hidden by the
cork lining. The saddle flask's leather holster has straps at the top and base
so that it can be attached to the saddle. The flap lid closes with an eye over
a stud. The lid of the holster is a replacement but this must have happened
quite a long time ago and the leather has blended well.
Maker :- Thomas Johnson
Condition :-The flask is in excellent
condition. The full set of hallmarks on the collar of the lid are good and
clear. The full set of hallmarks on the cup are good and still clear but
slightly rubbed by the friction of taking the flask out of its holster and
returning it. The leather holster has obviously had wear but is in good
condition. The lid of the holster was replaced at some time but this must have
been done a number of years ago
Hallmarked :- London 1875
Size :-
10.0 inches (25.4 cm) height of flask
x 2.0 inches (5.1 cm) diameter of flask base
It is not often that a saddle flask of this age is
found complete with holster. The top family crest of a demi-lion rampant
holding a mill-rind belongs to Mills of Essex and Kent.
