War Office seal made of steel with an ivory handle. The seal
has the Royal Arms in use from 1816 to the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837.
The steel seal is oblong and shows the Royal coat of arms consisting of the
Royal shield encircled by the Garter on which is written "HONI SOIT QUI
MAL Y PENSE" and topped by the Imperial crown. The Lion and Unicorn
supporters are on either side. Beneath is the Compartment which is a decorative
panel bearing the Royal Motto, "DIEU ET MON DROIT" and the royal
badges. The seal screws into the base of the ivory handle, which also unscrews
half way up.
Condition :-Good. There is some corrosion around the
rim of the steel seal and a small amount on its face but the details of the
seal are perfectly clear. The ivory handle is in extremely good condition with
no splits
Circa :- 1825
Size :- 4 inches (10.16 cm)
long x 1.2 inches (3.05 cm) wide at base of seal
The only way of dating this seal is the fact that it bears the
Royal Arms which were in use from 1816 to 1837. Therefore, it could have been
in use at any time between the last four years of George III's reign and
through the reigns of George IV and William IV.
