This figure has been rather crudely fashioned with
unproportionately large hands. Nevertheless, this pipe tamper is a very
interesting collector's piece. After the Napoleonic Wars were won, there was an
intense wave of patriotism in England which lasted for a number of years and
was expressed in many ways. For example, in 1820 and for some years later, the
production by James Mudie of a grand series of forty medals commemorating
British victories during the reign of George III met with an enormous amount of
success.
