Click here for a larger image Very striking Victorian sterling silver Clan badge. Circa 1870. Maker's mark only - JMC. The badge consists of matted and smooth silver, giving a pleasing contrast, The front of the badge has the cut out Robertson crest of a dexter hand holding up an imperial crown, surrounded by a belt and buckle, which is the symbol of a clansman. Applied to the belt is the Robertson motto VIRTUTIS GLORIA MERCES (Glory is the recompense of valour). The reverse of the badge is plain. The maker's mark is struck very clearly on the reverse of the end of the belt. Attached to the reverse of the badge is a sturdy horizontal pin secured by a hook and there is also a lug at the top of the badge.

These badges were worn by the Scots on the beret or sometimes on the shoulder to keep their plaids in place. To-day, this badge could have an alternative use as a very attractive pin to hold a lady's throw or pashmina in place or as a brooch on a lapel.
