The last year that silver was assayed at Newcastle
was 1883 and Newcastle silver is now very collectable. Silver mugs were popular
drinking vessels for alcoholic beverages from the late seventeenth to the late
eighteenth century. By the early nineteenth century it was becoming
increasingly fashionable to give silver mugs as christening presents.
