Extremely attractive Victorian parcel gilt half pint mug in
fitted case. London 1878 by William Hunter. The straight-sided mug is slightly
tapered at the lip. There is a plain band of silver gilt round the rim and base
of the mug and the plain D-shaped handle is also silver gilt. There is a plain
silver gilt diamond shaped cartouche on the side of the mug opposite the handle
with no engraving and this is echoed by a similar cartouche at the point where
the two ends of the handle are joined to the mug. The remainder of the mug's
body is flat chased and parcel gilt with a very decorative design of anemone
flowers, buds and leaves on a matted ground. The inside of the mug is silver
gilt. The very crisp hallmarks are stamped on the base of the mug and the base
is also engraved with "T.J.PARIS/SILVERSMITH/LIVERPOOL". The original
fitted case is in extremely good condition, which is probably partly why the
mug is in such excellent condition.
