Hilliard & Thomason were skilled manufacturers
of small silver. They exhibited a wide range at the Great Exhibition of 1851
and at the Birmingham Exhibition of 1886, by which time the firm was called
John Thomason. The company's speciality was amusing gifts for all occasions and
novelty items. The latter were extremely popular with the Victorians who loved
to have items of every day use in amusing shapes. These novelty "tub"
salts would make a charming addition to any dining table.
